Upon arrival in Puerto Maldonado you will be welcomed at the airport by lodge representatives and have a short stop at their office where you can leave un-needed baggage. You’ll arrive at the Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica lodge after a 45 minute boat ride along the Madre de Dios River. After a short briefing there’ll be time to settle into your cabana and enjoy lunch before getting ready for the afternoon excursion. You’re free to choose from 14 different excursions but we recommended starting with a guided walk into the Amazon Basin. This trail offers an excellent introduction to the forest environment, with opportunities for bird watching and observing exotic insects. We also recommend the Twilight River excursion for the first night. Witness the transformation as the animals and birds of the daytime make way for their nocturnal counterparts. On this guided boat ride you will learn about the different animals while you search for nightjars, owls, capybaras and up to three different caiman species. Spend the night at Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica Rainforest Lodge.

Day 18: Lake Sandoval Excursion & Canopy Walkway

Enter the Tambopata National Reserve on the Lake Sandoval excursion. In a wooden canoe you’ll glide across a beautiful lake, home to the endangered giant river otter, as well as red howler monkeys, red-bellied macaws, anacondas, side-neck turtles and black caimans. After returning to the lodge for lunch why not visit the Inkaterra Canopy Walkway. On this short trip, you’ll walk through the rainforest on a high suspension bridge network linking eight observation platforms. Be on the lookout for colourful toucans, woodpeckers, trogons, monkeys, and sloths. If you wish, you can extend the excursion and watch the sunset from one of the towers. After returning to the lodge for dinner, you can enjoy the daily nature presentation in the Eco Center. Spend the night at Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica Rainforest Lodge.

Day 19: Gamitana Creek & Hacienda Concepcion

Enjoy a trip to Gamitana Creek, located 25 minutes by boat from the lodge. This winding, dark-water creek is home to many piranha, caiman, turtles and birds. After navigating back downstream past the abundant flora and fauna, you will return to Gamitana Farm to do a short guided tour to see how local farmers grow fruits and vegetables. After lunch, enjoy the Hacienda Concepcion excursion, with over 200 different plant species, and learn about the uses and benefits of local flora. This is followed by a 30 minute canoe trip to look for turtles, sun grebes, nightjars and exotic herons. In the evening, you can venture into the forest to experience the mystery of the animal activity that awakens after dark. Listen to nocturnal forest sounds and spot species that only emerge at night. Spend the night at Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica Rainforest Lodge.

Day 20: Fly from Puerto Maldonado to Lima (flight not included)

Depart the lodge very early this morning for your transfer back to Puerto Maldonado, by river and road.
